Your natural lip colour, corrected and brought back up — the tone you had at twelve, before coffee, sun and salt water quietly took it away. No lipstick, no reapplying, no colour left on the cup. One appointment at our studio on Jalan Raya Uluwatu, and it holds for two to three years.
Every photo on this section is a real Rika Spa client in Uluwatu. No filters, no stock models.
Individual results vary with skin type, sun exposure and aftercare.
Lip blush — sulam bibir in Indonesian — is the treatment people in Bali ask us for most often and know the least about. So this page is the long answer: what it actually is, what it costs, whether it hurts, how it heals in this climate, and how long it really lasts on the Bukit.
Open daily 9am–9pm · Jl. Raya Uluwatu No.75X, Ungasan
Lip blush is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo. A very fine needle deposits pigment into the top layer of the lip — much shallower and much softer than a traditional tattoo — to restore and even out your natural colour. In Indonesia it's called sulam bibir, which translates literally as lip embroidery, and you'll see both names used around Bali for the same treatment.
This is the part most people get wrong. Lip blush doesn't paint a new colour onto your mouth. It works with the pigment already there, like a wash of watercolour rather than a coat of paint. Nobody should be able to tell you've had anything done — they should just think you look well.
Most of our clients don't come in asking to be pinker. They come in because their lip line has gone soft and blurry, or one section is noticeably paler than the rest, or the whole mouth reads greyish in photos. Lip blush fixes tone and definition first. The colour is almost a side effect.
Colour brought right to the edge of the natural lip line makes the lip read fuller in the mirror and considerably fuller in photos. No volume is added and nothing is injected. If you want actual size, that's a different treatment — we've written the honest comparison here.

It does the most obvious work on:
It's not for you right now if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking Accutane/Roaccutane (wait six months after finishing), in active cold-sore outbreak, diabetic without your doctor's clearance, on blood thinners, or under 18. If you get cold sores at all, tell us — an antiviral course starting two days before the appointment prevents the flare-up that heat and needling can otherwise trigger.
Less than you're imagining, and far less than a conventional tattoo. We apply a topical numbing cream for twenty minutes before starting, then a second anaesthetic once the lip is open and can absorb it properly. Most clients describe a vibration and a warm scratching feeling rather than pain, and a good number fall asleep in the chair somewhere in the second hour.
The honest caveat: the outline along the lip border is the sharpest part, and if you're on day one or two of your period you'll feel everything more. Book mid-cycle if you can.
Shade consult (20 minutes). We look at your natural lip tone in daylight, not under lamps, and at your skin's undertone. You'll see swatches on your own lip before anything is opened. Nothing is mixed until you've said yes.
Mapping and numbing (20 minutes). We draw the shape on, you check it in a mirror, we adjust. This is the moment to be picky — once we start, the shape is set. Numbing goes on after you approve.
First pass (45 minutes). Pigment goes in softly across the whole lip.
Second pass and edges (30–45 minutes). We build density where it's needed and define the border. You'll see the colour at its strongest here — roughly 40–50% darker than where it settles. This is normal and it is not the result.
Aftercare walkthrough (10 minutes). Balm on, instructions in your hand and sent to your WhatsApp so you're not relying on memory.
Healing takes about seven days to look normal and four weeks to finish properly. Here's the real timeline:
| Day | What you'll see |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Swollen and much darker than you wanted. Expected. Don't panic on day two — everyone does. |
| 3–4 | Tight and dry. Flaking starts. Balm constantly, and do not pick. |
| 5–7 | Flaking finishes. Colour looks like it's vanished entirely. |
| 8–14 | Colour comes back up from underneath as the skin settles. |
| 21–28 | True colour. Now we judge the result — and book the perfecting session if you want more. |
This is where most lip blush goes wrong on the Bukit, and none of it is in the generic aftercare sheets you'll find online:
If you're flying home soon, build in ten clear days before you swim. Plan your trip around the ocean rule, not the other way round.
Two to three years for most people before a refresh is worth it, and it fades gradually and evenly rather than going patchy — so there's no awkward stage.
What shortens it, in order of how much it matters in Bali: sun exposure without SPF, daily ocean swimming, oily skin, smoking, strong exfoliating actives near the mouth, and cold-sore outbreaks. A surfer out every morning will want a refresh closer to eighteen months. Someone who works indoors and wears SPF can pass three years easily.
These get confused constantly, and people fly to Bali booked in for the wrong one. The short version:
| Lip blush | Lip filler | |
|---|---|---|
| Changes | Colour and definition | Volume and size |
| Method | Pigment in the skin | Injected gel |
| Lasts | 2–3 years | 6–12 months |
| Looks fuller? | Yes — an illusion, via the lip line | Yes — actually bigger |
| Downtime | 7 days of flaking | 2–3 days of swelling |
| Reversible | No — it fades out | Yes — dissolvable |
If your lips are a good shape but look washed out, you want lip blush. If they're well-coloured but thin, you want filler. Plenty of people eventually have both — in which case do the filler first and wait four weeks, because the shape has to settle before we can map colour onto it. The full comparison is here.
We get asked this often enough that it deserves a straight answer rather than being dodged. Scholarly opinion is genuinely divided, and it isn't our place to issue a ruling — but here is what the discussion actually turns on, so you can take it to someone qualified.
The two questions that matter are whether the pigment forms a barrier that blocks water during wudhu, and whether the procedure counts as permanent alteration of creation. On the first: lip blush pigment sits within the skin rather than forming a film on top of it, unlike nail polish, and it fades out completely over a few years — which is why many scholars treat it differently from a permanent tattoo. On the second, opinion remains split, with some permitting it where the purpose is correcting a defect rather than pure adornment.
Our pigments are vegan and alcohol-free, and we'll give you the full ingredient list to take to your ustaz if you'd like it.
Your lip blush is done by one of our qualified permanent makeup artists — and the artist who does your first session is the one who does your perfecting session, so they know your lips.
Every appointment uses a sealed single-use needle cartridge opened in front of you. Pigments are vegan, cruelty-free and batch-numbered, and we log which batch went into your lip in case you ever need it. The room is fully sanitised between clients and we work gloved throughout. If you ever want to see the needle packaging or the pigment bottle, just ask; we'd rather you did.
We're on Jalan Raya Uluwatu No. 75X in Ungasan, open every day from 9am to 9pm. Easy for anyone on the Bukit — a few minutes from Uluwatu and Pecatu, about ten from Bingin and Balangan, fifteen from Jimbaran and twenty from Nusa Dua. Free parking for bikes and cars right out front.
Lip blush is by appointment only — it's a two-hour treatment and we block the room out for you, so please don't rely on walking in. Same-week slots are usually available; ask on WhatsApp.

Two to three years for most people. It fades gradually and evenly rather than patchily. Sun exposure and daily ocean swimming are what shorten it most in Bali, so a surfer may want a refresh closer to eighteen months.
Much less than a conventional tattoo. We numb topically for twenty minutes beforehand and again once the lip is open. Most clients describe warmth and vibration rather than pain, and many fall asleep during the second hour. The lip border is the sharpest part.
Not for ten days. Salt water and pool chemicals both pull pigment out of healing skin, and this is the single most common reason a result heals patchy in Bali. Plan ten clear days before you get back in the water.
Nothing — they're the same treatment. Sulam bibir is the Indonesian name, which translates as lip embroidery. You'll see both terms used across Bali, along with lip tattoo and cosmetic lip tattooing.
Not if it's done properly. Lip blush works with your existing pigment rather than painting over it, so the result reads as your own lips on a good day. The colour looks 40–50% stronger for the first week of healing, which is the stage people see in bad photos online — it is not the finished result.
Yes. Have the filler first and wait at least four weeks so the shape has fully settled before we map colour onto it. Doing it the other way round means mapping a shape that's about to change.
No — lip blush is appointment only, because it takes two to two and a half hours and we hold the room for you. Message us on WhatsApp and we can usually find you a slot the same week. Our massage, nail and facial treatments do take walk-ins.
