By day four in Uluwatu the sunset routine starts to wear thin. You’ve done Single Fin. You’ve done the temple. You’ve queued for a table at a cliff bar where the view is genuinely stunning and the drinks are genuinely nine dollars and the music is genuinely too loud to talk over.
Here’s the alternative: a couples massage in Uluwatu. Two hours, one room, nobody talking at you, and you both walk out actually relaxed instead of slightly sunburnt and mildly irritated.
No queue. No dress code. No pretending you can hear each other. And unlike most things on the Bukit, it costs a fraction of what you’d pay for the same treatment at home — which means you can book the long version without thinking about it.
It also solves the classic holiday mismatch: one of you has been surfing all week and is physically destroyed, the other has been walking cliff staircases and reading by the pool. You need different things. Side-by-side means you both get exactly what you need at the same time, in the same room, without negotiating.
Two beds, two therapists, one room, and a running order that goes something like:
Add facials at the end if you want the full version. That takes it to around three hours and it’s the best afternoon available on the Bukit.
Worth saying clearly: you do not both have to book the same thing.
He can have deep tissue on paddler’s shoulders while she has aromatherapy and actual sleep. Or the reverse — plenty of the strongest requests we get come from the women who’ve been surfing Bingin all week.
Just say what you each want when you arrive. The therapists work independently, and nobody’s watching you compare notes.
Honeymoons. Obviously. Book it early in the trip rather than late — you’ll wish you’d done it sooner.
Anniversaries. Better than a set menu with a candle on it.
The last day. Checkout at noon, flight at ten, nothing to do. Long couples package, shower, slow dinner in Ungasan, airport. Perfect use of an awkward day.
Wedding parties. If you’re getting married on the Bukit — and half of Ungasan seems to be — this is a good pre-wedding morning for the couple or the whole group. Book well ahead for groups.
Arguments. Not officially a service. Works remarkably well anyway.
Late afternoon is the sweet spot. Slow morning, lunch somewhere with a view, treatment from three, out by five or six.
Then coffee or a cold drink somewhere close — Suka Espresso, Drifter, The Cashew Tree if you’re heading Bingin way — and dinner without needing to be anywhere at a specific time. You’ll both be too relaxed to do anything ambitious, which is exactly right.
If you want the temple, go the day before or the day after. Kecak at sunset is brilliant but it’s a crowd and a stone bench, and it undoes some of the good work.
Couple’s rooms are limited, and late-afternoon slots go first — especially weekends and high season. Message ahead. A day’s notice is usually enough outside peak; give more for groups or wedding parties.
Tell us the two treatments you want, or turn up and decide there. Either works.
Two hours. One room. No queue. Better than the cocktail.
