What lymphatic drainage actually does
Your lymphatic system is the drainage network sitting just beneath your skin. Unlike blood, it has no pump. It moves only when you move — or when someone moves it for you.
Sit on a plane for fourteen hours, then spend a week hot, dehydrated and mostly horizontal on a sunbed, and the system stalls. Fluid pools in your belly, ankles, thighs and face. You feel heavy, foggy and swollen, and eating clean does nothing, because it was never food.
Drainage is a light, rhythmic, directional massage that manually walks that fluid back to the nodes where your body clears it. Gentle pressure. Slow rhythm. Visible result.

Lymphatic drainage dos and don'ts
DO
- Do drink properly, that day. Two litres minimum. You've just mobilised fluid — your kidneys have to finish the job. This is the single biggest factor in whether your result holds.
- Do book 24–48 hours before the event, not two hours. The result builds overnight.
- Do move a little afterwards. A gentle walk beats lying flat.
- Do book a course if you've got a wedding or a shoot. Two or three sessions across a week compound; one session is a reset, not a transformation.
- Do come in straight after a long flight. Your first 48 hours in Bali are the highest-value time to have this done.
- Do tell your therapist about health conditions. Pregnancy, heart or kidney conditions, blood clots, active infection or cancer treatment all change what's appropriate.
DON'T
- Don't get burned by "lymphatic drainage" that's really deep tissue. If someone is digging into you hard enough to hurt, it isn't drainage. The lymph vessels sit millimetres under the skin — heavy pressure pushes straight past them and does nothing except bruise you.
- Don't accept bruising as proof it worked. Bruises mean capillary damage, not results. Real drainage leaves no marks at all.
- Don't book it, then eat a salty restaurant meal and drink four cocktails. You will undo an hour's work in ninety minutes.
- Don't sunbathe hard immediately afterwards. Heat encourages fluid retention — the exact thing you just paid to reduce. Beach, yes. Four hours frying at Padang Padang, no.
- Don't expect it to replace movement or water. It kickstarts a stalled system; it doesn't replace one.
- Don't leave it to the morning of. Puffiness settles overnight. Same-day works, but the day before works better.
