Lip Blushing, Start to Finish

Lip blushing is a semi-permanent tattoo that works soft pigment into the surface of your lips.

Not filler. Not nineties lip liner. Not something you undo on a Tuesday because you changed your mind.

Open every day, 9am-9pm · Jl. Raya Uluwatu No. 75X, in front of Tarabelle · Parking outside

What lip blushing actually is

Permanent makeup artist at work at Rika Beauty & Spa, Uluwatu

A tiny needle deposits pigment into the upper layer of the lip. Not deep. Not opaque. It is layered translucently, in passes, so the colour blends with your natural lip tone rather than sitting on top of it like paint.

That translucency is the whole point, and it is also why lip blushing is harder than it looks. The same pigment lands differently on every person, because it is mixing with whatever colour your lips already are. A shade that reads as warm rose on one person reads as brick on another.

What it does:

What it does not do:

Other names for the same thing: lip blush tattoo, lip tint tattoo, cosmetic lip tattoo, semi-permanent lipstick, lip pinking. Some studios use “lip tattooing” to mean the older, heavier technique. Ask which one they mean before you book.

Lip blushing colours and how your shade is chosen

Most people arrive with a screenshot. That is fine — bring it. But understand what a lip blushing colour chart can and cannot tell you.

A colour chart shows you the pigment in the bottle. It does not show you the pigment on your lips. Because the layer is translucent, your final colour is roughly:

your natural lip tone + the pigment + how your skin heals it,

Which is why any honest studio swatches on you, in daylight, before anything starts.

The undertone question. Cool undertones take pinks, mauves and berries cleanly. Warm undertones take corals, peaches and warm nudes. Put a cool pigment on a warm lip and it can go grey or ashy as it heals. This is the single most common reason people end up unhappy.

Go lighter than your target. Colour can be built up at the perfecting session six to eight weeks later. It cannot easily be taken back. If someone puts you straight into a deep berry on the first pass, they are prioritising the before-and-after photo over your face.

One more thing specific to anyone living somewhere sunny: a tan changes the equation. A shade chosen against pale winter skin will read differently against a six-month tan. Choose against the skin you actually have.

Lip neutralization — lip blushing on dark or pigmented lips

Lip neutralization before and after on naturally pigmented lips

If your lips have a naturally dark, blue, grey or purple cast — common with deeper skin tones, and also caused by smoking, iron deficiency, certain medications and sun damage — a standard lip blushing pass will not work. The cool pigment underneath will fight whatever you put on top, and you will heal ashy.

Lip neutralization is the correction step that happens first. A warm-toned corrective pigment — orange, peach or warm coral, depending how deep the cast is — is worked in to cancel the cool tone. Only then does the actual colour go on.

What that means practically:

If a technician looks at pigmented lips and says “no problem, one session” without mentioning neutralization at all, book somewhere else.

Lip blushing healing stages, day by day

The healing is not dramatic but it is visible, and almost everyone panics somewhere around day four. Here is the actual sequence.

Day 0 — immediately after Bright.

Much brighter than your target. Slightly swollen, a bit like you have eaten something too hot. Swelling is worst in the first four hours and mostly gone by the next morning.

Days 1–3 — the loud phase

Colour is at its most intense. Lips feel tight and dry. Do not lick them. This is the stage people photograph and regret photographing.

Days 4–6 — flaking

The surface layer lifts and flakes off, like a sunburn. Patchy, uneven, unattractive. Do not pick it. Picking pulls pigment out with the flake and leaves a gap you will be looking at for a year.

Days 7–10 — the ghost phase

Everything looks like it has vanished. Your lips will seem almost bare. This is normal and it is temporary. The pigment is still there, sitting under a fresh layer of skin that has not yet gone translucent.

Weeks 2–4 — it comes back

Colour resurfaces gradually and settles into its real tone. What you see at week four is roughly what you have.

Weeks 6–8 — perfecting session

Lips take pigment unevenly. Nearly everyone needs a second pass to fill gaps, even the border and deepen colour if wanted. Treat this as part of the treatment, not an optional extra.

Overall the colour softens by about 40–50% from day one to day thirty. That is the number to hold onto when you look in the mirror on day two.

Lip blushing aftercare

Aftercare is where results are won or lost. All of it comes down to keeping the lip dry, clean and undisturbed for ten days.

Every client of ours goes home with this written down, plus the ointment — part of what our lip blush therapists in Bali include as standard.

For 10 days:

  • No swimming. Ocean, pool, hot springs. Pools are worse, because of the chlorine.
  • No sun on the lips. Two weeks minimum. UV fades healing pigment and can shift the tone.
  • No picking. Let the flakes come off on their own. Picking pulls pigment out with them.
  • Blot, do not wipe, after eating or drinking.
  • Barrier ointment, thin layer, several times a day. Too thick suffocates the skin.
  • No makeup, lipstick, gloss, exfoliants, acids or retinol near the lip line.
  • Skip chilli, very hot drinks and alcohol for the first few days. Use a straw where you can.
  • No heavy sweating for three or four days. Salt is an irritant.
  • No kissing until flaking has finished — about a week.

Before-and-after photos are the most misleading thing in this industry, because most are shot on day zero when colour is at peak intensity. Ask any studio for healed results at thirty days. If they only have fresh ones, that tells you something.

What actually changes: colour where there wasn’t any, a defined edge, evened-out symmetry, and lips that read fuller because a defined border catches light. What does not change: your lip volume.

How long does lip blushing last?

Twelve to eighteen months for most people before it needs refreshing. The range is wide because the variables are real.

Factor Effect

Sun exposure

Biggest single factor — heavy sun cuts it to 8–12 months

Shade chosen

Light nudes fade first, deeper berries hold longest

Oily skin

Sheds pigment faster

Aftercare in the first 10 days

Poor aftercare costs you months

Smoking

Shortens it noticeably

At two years most people have a soft even wash of colour left — lighter than day thirty, still better than bare. Plenty never top up.

At three years usually just a faint tint at the border. It should fade evenly; patchy, grey or orange fading is a pigment-quality problem from the original work, not normal.

It softens rather than vanishing, which means you are never stuck with it.

Before and after

Before-and-after photos are the most misleading thing in this industry, because most are shot on day zero when colour is at peak intensity. Ask any studio for healed results at thirty days. If they only have fresh ones, that tells you something.

When it goes wrong

Worth reading before you book, because almost every bad outcome traces back to a decision made in the first ten minutes of the appointment.

  • Too dark. The technician started at the target shade instead of under it. Fades eventually, but you live with it for a year.
  • Wrong undertone. Cool pigment on warm lips heals ashy. Warm on cool heals orange. A consultation failure, not bad luck.
  • The hard line. Over-worked border that reads as tattooed lip liner.
  • Migration. Pigment implanted too deep spreads past the lip border. Genuinely difficult to fix, sometimes needs laser removal.
  • Patchy healing. Usually normal, and usually solved at the perfecting session.
  • Infection. Rare and almost entirely preventable with single-use needles.

How to avoid all of it: ask to see healed work at thirty days, not fresh. Ask which pigment brand they use. Confirm needles are opened in front of you. Confirm the perfecting session is included. Approve the mapped shape in a mirror before anything starts. And if you have pigmented lips, ask specifically about neutralization.

Not alternatives to each other — plenty of people have both filler and lip blushing, just not within four weeks. If you are weighing this against brows, most find lip blushing easier to sit through than microblading, though brows heal faster.

A note on cheap lip blushing: the two costs a studio can quietly cut are pigment quality and needle reuse. One fades badly. The other is a health risk.

Why book your lip blushing with us

Healed lip blushing result photographed in natural daylight

Lip blushing takes about two hours, and you spend most of that lying still with your hands and feet completely free. Most people use the time rather than lose it. Nothing below goes anywhere near the mouth, so none of it interferes with healing — and it means one trip down Jl. Raya Uluwatu instead of three.

Hands and feet. This is the obvious one, because it is the same hour and you are already in the chair. A gel manicure runs Rp 340K and lasts two to three weeks, which usually outlives a holiday. A spa pedicure is Rp 190K on its own, or Rp 360K with gel — worth it if you are living in sandals. And if you want something more than a single colour, our custom nail art is priced per nail from Rp 5K, so one accent finger costs almost nothing. Bring a screenshot; Ocha works from reference photos.

Something for the rest of you. Book a Balinese massage for after rather than before — you want to arrive alert and leave relaxed, not the other way round. Sixty minutes is Rp 200K, ninety is Rp 290K. If you have been surfing, the Signature Surf Massage targets the shoulders and lower back that Bingin and Balangan leave sore. For something that works on puffiness rather than muscle, full body lymphatic drainage is Rp 480K for sixty minutes — we simply avoid the face on the day.

Eyes and brows. Different area entirely, so no conflict with a healing lip. A lash lift at Rp 215K opens the eye without extensions, and brow tint or lamination is also Rp 215K. Both pair well with lips precisely because your lips will be doing very little for the first week — a defined brow carries the face while the colour settles.

Book these before your lips, not after. Facial treatments involve steam, extractions and active ingredients that all reach the lip area, so they belong in the week before or two weeks after. Same for upper lip waxing at Rp 100K — hot wax on skin next to a healing tattoo is not a good combination. And 6D Microblading at Rp 2.200K is technically possible on the same day, but we would rather not: two semi-permanent treatments in one sitting makes for a long, uncomfortable appointment and doubles the aftercare you are managing at once. Space them two to three weeks.

If you are booking more than one thing, look at our deal packages first — Ultimate Eye Glam is Rp 550K and Soft Beauty Enhancement is Rp 420K, both cheaper than the same treatments booked separately.

FAQs

Pressure and vibration more than pain, with topical numbing before and again during. Most find it easier than brows.

About two hours including consultation, mapping and numbing.

Not literally. A defined border reads as fuller, but nothing is injected.

Partly — saline or laser, over multiple sessions, with no guaranteed clean result. Treat it as semi-permanent, not erasable.

Once healing is complete, around two weeks. Then as much as you like.

Often yes, with preventative antiviral medication arranged through a pharmacist or doctor. Always disclose it at consultation.

Three to four weeks. Not two days — you want to be past the ghost phase.

If your lips are pale, uneven or undefined and you are tired of reapplying, generally yes. If you want volume, this is the wrong treatment.

Two hours once. Then you stop thinking about it.
