Sun, salt and sunscreen. Bali is where you want your nails to look good in every photo, and it is also the hardest place to keep them that way. Gel polish that lasts three weeks at home can start lifting after ten days of surf, pools and coconut oil.
This guide explains how long gel nails in Bali really last, what the heat and saltwater actually do to gel, the habits that make it last longer, and what a gel manicure costs at Rika Spa in Uluwatu.
The short answer: about two to three weeks on fingers and three to four weeks on toes. That is for a normal holiday with swimming, sun and a bit of beach time.
If you surf every day, the number drops. Board wax, rash guards, zinc and long sessions in salt water all work on the edges of your nails, so many surfers see the first chip around day eight to twelve.
Toes last longer because they grow more slowly and take less knocking. A gel pedicure done on day one of a two-week trip will usually still look fresh on the flight home.
Gel is cured under a UV or LED lamp, so it is much tougher than regular polish. It does not dry out in the heat. What shortens its life in Bali is everything around it.
Water. Nails soak up water and swell slightly, then shrink again as they dry. Hours in the sea or pool, every day, repeat that cycle again and again, and the gel slowly loosens at the edges.
Salt and chlorine. Both dry out the nail and the skin around it. Dry cuticles crack and catch, and that is often where lifting starts.
Oils and sunscreen. Coconut oil, after-sun and sunscreen are great for your skin, but if they get under a lifted edge they speed up peeling.
Sun. Strong UV can fade some light shades and turn clear top coats slightly yellow over a few weeks. Darker and nude shades hide this best.
From what we see in the salon, these are the usual suspects:
None of this means you should skip the sea. It just means a little care goes a long way.
Regular polish is quick and cheap but it usually chips within a few days of sea swims. Fine for a weekend, not for a two-week trip.
Gel polish is the best fit for most holidays. It is dry the moment you leave the lamp, it survives sand and sunscreen, and it lasts the length of most trips.
Builder gel goes under the colour to strengthen weak or bitten nails. It is a good idea if your nails often break, or if you surf a lot.

Can I swim straight after a gel manicure?
Yes. Gel is fully cured under the lamp, so you can swim, shower and go to the beach the same day.
Does saltwater ruin gel nails?
No, but daily hours in the sea dry out the nail and cuticle, which makes lifting more likely. Rinse, dry and oil your cuticles and it will last much longer.
Why are my gel nails lifting after a week?
Usually it is long water time, nails that are a bit too long, or dry cuticles. Surfers see it most. Come in early and we can fix one nail for IDR 37K rather than redoing them all.
Should I remove gel before flying home?
Only if it is lifting. If it still looks good, keep it and have it removed at home in a week or two. If you want it off before you leave, gel removal is IDR 55K.
Is gel safe in the Bali heat?
Yes. The heat does not melt or soften cured gel.
