Padang Padang gives and Padang Padang takes.
It gives you one of the best-looking waves in Bali through a gap in the rocks. It takes your shoulders, your ribs, occasionally your dignity, and definitely your legs on the climb back up through the cave and those stairs.
Then there’s the version most people don’t post about: two hours sitting in the lineup waiting for a set, getting dropped in on, paddling back out, repeat. Your lats are cooked and you haven’t even caught anything.
Either way, you need a massage near Padang Padang, and you need it today rather than “sometime this week.”
Paddling is a shoulder-dominant movement repeated hundreds of times with almost no counter-movement. Your chest tightens, your shoulders roll forward, your upper back stretches out and gets weak.
Duck diving loads the same structures under compression. Popping up fires the lower back. Lying on the board hyperextends your lumbar spine for however long you’re out there.
Add a staircase — Padang’s, Bingin’s, Impossibles’ long walk — and your calves and hip flexors join the queue.
That’s why a general relaxing massage sometimes doesn’t touch it. You need someone working the specific tissue that surfing loads.
Deep tissue, upper body focus. Traps, rhomboids, lats, the space under the shoulder blade. Firm, slow, occasionally unpleasant, entirely worth it.
Chest and front-of-shoulder release. The bit everyone skips. Tight pecs are why your shoulders sit forward and why the back keeps knotting no matter how much you work on it.
Lower back and hips. From popping up and from lying on the board.
Calves and feet. For the stairs. Reflexology if they’re really gone.
Signature Surf Massage or full-body Balinese, if you’re not injured — just tired, salty and done.
Say “strong pressure, focus on shoulders” when you walk in. That single sentence gets you the right session.
After the morning session, not before. Deep massage before surfing leaves you loose in a way that isn’t always useful in the water.
Midday is ideal. Between about 11am and 3pm the Bukit is baking and the surf’s usually onshore anyway. This is dead time — use it.
Same-day beats next-day if you’ve had a heavy session. Working tissue while it’s still warm and inflamed does more than waiting until it’s seized.
Night before a flight if you’ve been surfing all week. You’ll actually sleep on the plane.
Dawn patrol. Out before the crowd, in before it doubles.
Climb back up. Breakfast at one of the warungs on the way or a bowl at Nalu. Coffee at Suka Espresso or Drifter.
Ride over here around eleven. Ninety minutes deep tissue with the fan on and the plants doing their thing. Fall asleep. Everyone does.
Out by one, loose and slightly stupid with it. Nap through the worst of the heat. Evening session if the wind’s kind, or Uluwatu Temple for the Kecak if it isn’t.
That’s a nearly perfect day on the Bukit and the massage is the hinge the whole thing swings on.
We’re minutes from Padang Padang, Impossibles and Bingin and Balangan — short ride, easy parking. There’s a rinse, so you can come straight off the beach.
Bring water. Drink more afterwards. Deep tissue plus dehydration equals a headache, and you’re already dehydrated from four hours in salt water.
If something’s genuinely injured — sharp pain, not soreness — say so. Massage helps recovery, but it isn’t treatment for a torn anything.
Deep tissue, Balinese, reflexology, sports-style work, 60 or 90 minutes. Walk in if we’ve got space; message ahead for late afternoon, which fills fastest.
Come sandy. Come sore. Leave loose.
